The Therapeutic Wisdom of Yoga: A 4-day Intensive with Doug Keller

This 4-day intensive puts modern understanding of the body in traditional ‘yoga’ terms for a deeper appreciation of the practice, and to inspire students to explore the purposes and benefits of yoga for health, fitness, and its therapeutic benefits with understanding and confidence. This will include the very important dimension of the role and benefits of yoga for healthy aging.

The content covers:

  • Principles of joint health, and how a focus on joint mobility is the first step toward students improving their strength and flexibility, as well as overcoming joint pain.
  • The myofascial lines governing muscles and joints introduced by Tom Myers, as applied to concepts of prana and of asana. This will clarify and enhance your understanding of how to teach and sequence the practice for therapeutic benefit to your students.
  • The key elements of yoga practice that support healthy aging.
  • Common obstacles to practice that limit progress, common injuries and their causes, and the common therapeutic problems that bring students to yoga.

This 25-hour intensive is part of AIRYOGA’s 300-hour Advanced Teacher Training, and yet will be open to the general public.

The approach of this intensive will include:

  • Injury prevention: how to work safely with joints such as the knees, wrists and shoulders, hips and sacroiliac joints.
  • Understanding the connections between muscles along myofascial lines, which makes clear the logic and purpose of sequencing, as well as the deep wisdom of the asanas themselves.
  • Understanding fundamental functional movement patterns which are supported and improved through asana practice for greater health and freedom from pain.

  • Principles by which teachers can assess students’ posture and movement patterns, for the purpose of understanding their pain patterns, and for being able to provide direction through recommendations and guidance for practice.
  • Principles of breath in asana practice, and approaches to practice for improving breath patterns.
  • Specific understanding of the different dimensions of the aging process, and how yoga addresses these and can be adjusted according to students’ abilities.
